The Lost Gardens of Heligan

The Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall were created over a period from the mid-18th century up to the beginning of the 20th century. The gardens were neglected after the First World War and buried for almost a century. Overgrown with plants, broken trees, and hidden under blackberry brambles, it was only recently restored in the 1990s. The botanical gardens have since turned into one of the most popular tourist destinations in the UK. To add to the mystery and allure, local artists Sue Hill, and her brother Pete, were brought in to create giant Chia Pet-like sculptures.

Alou Diarra Shot by Karl Lagerfeld

Nowness has presented a snap by Chanel Designer Karl Largerfeld of French national football captain Alou Diarra. Largerfeld shot the football star wearing the new Nike away kit, in which the Nike designers embraced the traditional French marinière stripe for the kit.
Below is a few questions Nowness asked Diarra about his new jersey.

What was your first impression of the new jersey?
I just loved it immediately. When I saw it I thought about sailors and about Jean Paul Gaultier.

How about the rest of the team?
We all love it. It’s very fitted and you can wear it in everyday life. After the France game against Croatia [in March], we all wanted to keep our jerseys, so we refused to exchange them with the Croatian players [a football tradition]. Philippe Mexès [the France international] told me that his teammates at AS Roma have asked him to bring some jerseys for them!

Do you feel more patriotic playing in something so inimitably French?
It’s surprising to see such a design on a jersey, but when you think about it, it’s very representative of our culture. We are the country of fashion and design.

Specialized S-Works + McLaren Venge

Development took 4 years, including 21 visits to the wind tunnel, all to create the lightest, fastestUCI-approve performance bike. From the specification alone, it is easy to see the Specialized Vengeas a Frankstein’s Monster. A merging of otherwise 2 improbable combinations – aerodynamic agility, which designers took from Specialized Shiv, and sturdy yet lightweight aspect, extracted from Specialized Tarmac. However, its creation offered a perfect opportunity to work with the leading F1 racing car maker, McLaren, and explore the reach of composite technology. The result became theSpecialized S-Works + McLaren Venge, that perfect symmetry of technology and art. A sub-950 grams frame with specially designed seatpost, handlebars, wheels, even braking system, the total weight of the new bike came to only 2071 grams or 4.6 pounds. When cyclist-sprinter Mark Cavendish took the prototype for a spin late last year, he immediately declared “I f@#king love it”. The Specialized S-Works + McLaren Venge is currently field with teams HTC-Highroad, Saxo Bank, and Astana, former team of Lance Armstrong and Alberto Contador. Expect some speed record to be broken this cycling season.

Gainsbourg (France)

One of my favorite movies & personalities! If you don't know who Serge Gainsbourg is. Get to know him.

Movie Bio -

Taking the best from LA VIE EN ROSE and AMÉLIE, Joann Sfar’s GAINSBOURG is a completely original take on one of France’s greatest mavericks, the illustrious and infamous Serge Gainsbourg (Eric Elmosnino), brought to us by one of the most renowned comic book artists of our time.

Young Lucien parades around Nazi‐occupied Paris in 1941 with a yellow star, which he has craftily turned into a sheriff star, pinned to his jacket. After graduating from art school years later, the disillusioned artist tries to earn a living by playing the piano in local bars… and thus came about the cabaret star of the Swinging Sixties: Serge Gainsbourg. His looks may be unconventional, but he still manages to lure the mythic Brigitte Bardot (Laetitia Casta) to bed, seduce Jane Birkin (Lucy Gordon) with a pair of French flag underpants, and waltz with Juliette Greco (Anna Mouglalis) at all hours of the night. Yet something always stands in the way of his happiness, and it takes the form of a character, La Gueule (Doug Jones), who will stimulate him, torment him, and most of all, render him the icon that continues to thrill us today.
