Sydney Fashion Week - Final Day

Well it's the end of Sydney Fashion Week 2011. And what a week! After five days, 16 hour days and 40 individual runway shows. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit 'fashioned out' by day five. I did find myself needing a runway show fix this morning as much as my double shot flat white.

When judging each show. I found the best comparison was a little like going to a new bar or club. There's a VIP and general access line. You look at the crowd and see how many hot girls there are peppered in to judge what the atmosphere of the show would like. Does the music work well with the look? And does it keep the crowd upbeat? All brands only get one chance to impress people with a fashion show.

In the past couple days, most shows I have been commentating have been offering a perspective of 95% women's fashion. It was great to finally see some men's fashion today and put my judging skills to the test. Two labels- Saint Augustine Academy and Arj Selvam incorporated men's garments with women's collections. I was impressed. 16 hole lace up boots, cowboy boots and open-toed sandals were the choice of footwear with structured style clothing from suits with 3/4 pants or over-sized coats and paisley printed shirts. The colours were quite dark using tans, greys, blacks and whites. I personally wouldn't wear the entire outfits, yet there were key pieces I would add to my own wardrobe to enhance my style.

After being given the task of writing my experience & interpretation from a 'blokes' perspective, who didn't have a great deal of knowledge for women's fashion and fashion events. I'll take away from this week a new appreciation for the many layers of the fashion industry and how I will apply the creative process to my own work in lifestyle design. I must acknowledge the friendly staff and all the teams that organised and made my experience at Sydney Fashion Week 2011 run so smoothly.

Sydney Fashion Week - Day 4

Arriving at Sydney Fashion Week each day, you start to notice the most common accessories with everyone's outfits are - camera's, coffee and cigarettes. The days can be long and there's always a little down time to mingle with all types of characters. Or just people watch and appreciate the views of Sydney Harbour and the Opera House in between shows. I'm well and truly into the groove now and I think my coffee intake has doubled over the week!

Today was a special day with two invitations to go backstage for Yeojin Bae and Limedrop. Of course the first thing that popped into my head was - naked girls! But once you're ushered through the third security point. I was more overwhelmed by the frantic zero hour preparation being done before the show. Assistants on the floor making last minute alterations to garments and shoes, people being photographed and make up artists prepping the models. It was a great experience to see the back-end process and why runway show's are notorious for running late.

I attended the TAFE NSW S.I show which included Anna Westcott, Charlotte O'Carrigan, Emma Mulholland and Leah Hibbert. I wasn't going to miss this show because I wanted to see the young blood coming up the ranks. I also know from working in the creative industry that young talent can be more daring with their work. I was impressed with some of the pieces throughout the show and must give mention that the TAFE students were much more creative with the digital screen at the beginning of the runway than other show's I'd seen.

The last show by Alistair Trung was a great show to finish the day on. A blanket of smoke was created down the runway to set the mood for a very high level, dark show with a sinister soundtrack of ambient sounds and heavy bass. Very cool!

I've definitely learnt more appreciation for women's shoes, bangles and how important accessories are in runway shows to tie a look together.

Sydney Fashion Week - Day 3

After three days of watching fashion shows, I find the novelty wears off and I can really start to break down the components of a show. Did they use additional props? What was the lighting like? Did the models wear the garments well? Why did they choose particular song & did they complement the show? And of course. Did the clothing look good & were they pushing the boundaries or playing it safe with their pieces?

In three days of immersing myself in fashion and should I emphasise- ALL women's, I have learnt much more about how this industry works. It can be make or break if each element of a show isn't at a high level. The clothing might be right, yet the music doesn't keep the energy level of the crowd high. It's all pieces of a puzzle that can finish with a memorable landscape or a patchy image that doesn't quite make sense.

Later in the afternoon, I did two off-site showings by Rebecca Manning Swimwear & Tovah. Both Brisbane based designers presented their range at The Westin Hotel Suites. It was like a scene out of an Entourage episode walking past random models along the hotel hallways, a significant contrast from the backstreet warehouse spaces and multi space buildings we viewed yesterday's designers in. It's interesting how 'environment' plays a huge part leading up to or during a show.

The highlights for today were the variety of colour palette's, butterfly and galaxy prints, Star Wars style music, cobalt blue shoes, digital displays. Notable shows who managed to achieve that element of cohesiveness were Shakuhachi & Gary Bigeni who successfully painted a picture for me.

Sydney Fashion Week - Day 2

Day two of Sydney Fashion Week kicked off with a bang! After a double shot of fashion week's life blood and a ham & cheese croissant, the novelty of day one had worn off & I was ready to see some serious talent.

Rachel Gilbert set the pace for the day and reminded me what fashion shows were all about- great garments, sexy models, a thumping soundtrack and most importantly, a point of difference. Her show was complimented with a solo violinist who reinterpreted versions of hip hop tracks by Kanye West, Nas and Fat Joe. It was a nice contrast to the elegant designed clothing. With the use of green, yellow, sequins, ruffles, evening gowns & shoulder pads- I was impressed with how she tied everything together. As a result her show set the bar very high for shows to follow.

Two off-site meetings during the day reminded me that creative fashion isn't just about runway shows. Down a few back alleys and through a large red barn style door brought us to the Melbourne Metal Collective made up of six jewellery designers. Five labels which challenged my appreciation for fashion with the use of healing crystals, leathers, feathers and even human teeth!

Next stop- Graz Mulchay, who previously designed for Ksubi Eyewear, talked us through his latest solo eyewear collection. Somehow, the catch up ended with me being photographed with a monkey mask. I must give props to Graz for being the only guy I know that can rock an Akubra hat, an iconic Australian head gear.

It was refreshing to see more designers use the space more constructively with additional props, lighting and displays to help create an environment and experience at each show including Nookie & Sara Phillips.

Sydney Fashion Week Launch

Certain thoughts come to mind when you think of Fashion Week. For me, fashion-heavy cities likeTokyo, Paris or New York seem to have the biggest influence on the clothes I wear. So when I was invited to attend Sydney Fashion Week. I was filled with curiosity, doubt & excitement. As an aussie, I already had a good knowledge of Australian style yet, this was the first time I would see how Australian style reflected on the rest of the world.

Monday was ignition for Sydney Fashion Week & I was going there with an open mind. Bec & Bridge kicked off the week with a collection of fish scale prints, super size fedora hats, gradients & pastel colours, afresh look that smelt like summer.

Let's be straight up. If you ask any guy that attends a fashion week what they thought of it. What's the first thing they tell you? How hot the girls were! We can't help but be biased when judging a show by the calibre of women, from longest legs to nationalities. We're guys! And as serious as Fashion Weeks are, that's how we relate a show to real life. Sydney Fashion Week was no exception. Sydney girls are known for long legs, great tans & sun kissed hair.

Alex Perry's collection was a stand out, but I was more distracted by the who's who of Sydney sitting front row. The seats were filled with many of Sydney's well known personalities & Mr Perry didn't disappoint. For someone who isn't an expert on ladies fashion. You soon appreciated the level of detail & finish gone into his pieces. For me this show was more an experience of the calibre of people that attended than the actual show. Not to take away from how good the collection was.

After the lunch, I was a bit more focused on the show because the wow factor of being at fashion week wore off. Friend of Mine were my favourite collection who went down a different avenue for show. Rather than the conventional attitude of springy girly colours. They were more inspired by a chic rock look. First disappointment arrived with Gail Sorronda's show after being a long time fan of her designs.

Throughout the afternoon I noticed similarities with each designers collection from the use of pastel colours, long flowing dresses or the strong use of mint, bright yellow, plum & skin colours. Arnsdorf, Morrison, Friend Of Mine, Flannel, Karla Spetic & Gail Sorronda followed into the evening.

Jake is representet by one of North America's premiere booking agencies, AM Only and has releases on some popular dance labels, Deadmau5's "Mau5trao Recordings" being the most notable. Jake has requested couple artworks to strength his present branding which presents skull wearing a hat with two diamonds placed in eye sockets. Artwork will be used as part of his printing and promotional materials. Next step of the project will be cover design for Jake's forthcoming LP.

I've only really taken notice of Sham Kar Wai & his achievements since spending some time in Hong Kong. He's recently acquired A Bathing Ape & has cemented is presence in Hong Kong. Check the entire interview here.

WSJ: About half your revenue comes from brands you control and half from distributing imported lines. Which direction has the most potential?
Mr. Sham: Our in-house brand has become more important for us since 1995. Now, we have over 10 in-house brands. We can target different customers and markets. We find this is more flexible and at more price points.

China is Hong Kong from many years ago. People who are into fashion can’t afford designer brands, so our in-house brands are a good offering for them. And in China, there aren’t too many platforms yet—malls or street level stores—that are suitable for imported designer brands. That’s why there, we’re more focused on in-house brands. Right now, it’s a 50-50 split (in revenue from in-house brands and from imported brands). Our target in the coming three to five years, I want to get [the in-house share] to 70%.

Imported brands? We haven’t stopped expanding. But the pace is different. It’s more gradual. These brands need exclusivity and they need certain (store) environments. But our in-house brands, we can go into department stores, or stores in malls, or build our own flagship stores. In-house brands is really our focus in China. And the margin, of course, is way better with our own brands.

Where does the company see most of its growth?We want to have 30% growth in China in terms of the area of our selling space (and our sales). In Hong Kong, we’ll have expansion, but it’s not as fast. In Hong Kong, we can expand 10% in sales; in China 30% or more. That is our target.

In February, I.T acquired the Japanese brand A Bathing Ape. Why did you buy the brand, and what is your strategy to incorporate the brand with the company?
A Bathing Ape is one of our favorite brands and it’s been very successful in Hong Kong. But in Japan, the economy hasn’t been so strong, and the company’s finances weren’t doing so well. They had some problems with their cash flow. So we had a chance to acquire it and we think we can help it develop even better than before.

We first have to figure out how to make it profitable. Then after that, we can expand its product range and bring it to more international markets. The brand is already famous in America and Europe. Also, we think having an operation in Japan could help us bring some of our other concepts over to Japan. But not now, of course. We’re still dreaming about that. After we acquired, the earthquake happened.

What are the unique challenges to managing a retail business in Hong Kong and China?In Hong Kong, it’s the rent. In the rest of the world, where rent isn’t so high, people have more room to be creative. In Japan and Europe, you have very interesting stores, interesting concepts. But not in Hong Kong. There isn’t much creativity here. We have to pay high rent so stores are very commercial.

In China, the challenge is communication. In Hong Kong, we spread one message and we reach a lot of people. But in China, there are so many brands and advertising costs are three to four times more expensive in China.

The other challenge is the people. The service standards for our staff—I’m not satisfied. We have to spend more time to educate and train. And there’s a lot of competition for staff. Suddenly, everybody is opening stores, and so there’s a lack of good salespeople. This is the story of an expanding country—there is a manpower problem.

Well, let’s start with this ad campaign you’ve done for Magnum Ice Cream.I’ve done many ads because that’s my new career. It’s an inspiring extension for my mind. I always loved advertising. If I hadn’t been in fashion, I’d have been in advertising. I like everything about it. I think it’s an interesting expression of the culture of the moment. I just put out a huge book about the history of German advertising from 1900-1920, because it was the best period. It’s not very well known, but there were great artists. And those posters—when they show up, there are hardly any left—sell for fortunes. It’s a very interesting book, I must say. In fact it’s a box with 12 books.

So why ice cream?Don’t forget my father was a milkman. He produced Carnation milk in Europe under different names, so I like to say he was a milkman. And ice cream is made with milk, no?

Do you eat it?I would love to if I was allowed to eat sugar, but my doctor told me that sugar wasn’t needed for me so I haven’t touched it in ten years. I also did the ad for Dom Pérignon and I don’t drink alcohol, but I think it’s a very civilized drink.

You’re a busy man.I’m always busy. You know, the more I do, the more ideas I have—that’s the funny thing. The brain is a muscle, and I’m a kind of body-builder.

Do you ever take vacations?I’m not an employee who goes to the office every morning at the same time. Then, vacations are needed. I’m like a rock singer with one-night stands on the road. I’m here for two days in New York; I leave in the morning early. I come back for Anna Wintour’s party at the Met, then again at the end of May for a prize I get from the Gordon Parks Foundation. I’m lucky that I can do all these things in the best conditions. I don’t have to struggle for that. I don’t have to discuss budgets. I don’t do meetings. At Chanel, there are no meetings. At Chanel, we do what we want, whenever we want and it works. And Fendi is the same.

Do you ever think about cutting your hair?No, because I’m afraid it won’t grow again. And I’m not very gifted for hairdos. This is the quickest thing in the world. It takes less than five seconds.

Do you do it yourself?No, I have someone who comes to the house and washes it, puts in the dry shampoo, and takes care if it because I have no time. I don’t even have time to go to the dentist. I’m busy but in a pleasant way. I’m the one who wanted to do all of it, so I can’t complain.

What are your thoughts on Dior? Who should take over?Well I’m not a consultant there, but I think Riccardo Tisci would be good, and then Haider Ackermann at Givenchy—not because they are friends of mine, but because they are good.

So we’ll be seeing more ads from you.I saw newspapers saying that maybe I do too much because I work with big companies—Coca-Cola, Sky TV, Magnum, Schwarzkopf, which is like L’Oreal in Europe. I’m not going to calm down, because that’s not my nature. But I don’t have to think about what’s next. I think that’s a very healthy thing. The Ivory Tower in the end will kill you.

You’ve famously worn Dior Homme, Tom Ford. What menswear designers do you like now?Tom Ford is not as good on me as younger men. And you know why? Because I wore the same kind of clothes thirty years ago—Italian-made by Caraceni. I love the way Tom Ford suits are made. They’re chic; they’re elegant. But on my younger entourage, they look better than on me. I wear Dior Homme—my old Hedi Slimane suits. The ones they do today, too, as long as they don’t get too flou. And a little Lanvin. I used to love Margiela, but it’s not him anymore and it shows a little. I used to buy quite a lot of Japanese labels, too, like Undercover and Number (N)ine, but that one disappeared. Mister Hollywood does well-made clothes. You know, I hate made-by-order clothes. It’s up to me to fit into them, not to buy some orthopedic stuff to get the body into. I never had one button touched on a Dior suit. Size 48 is my perfect size. In the past you had to do fittings because there was nothing really good. But when I went to Caraceni thirty years ago, there was one fitter for waistcoat, one for jacket, one for pants—it took hours. You needed three months to get the clothes. No, no, no. I like things immediately.

Is there one thing that you don’t like a woman to wear?I’m not mad for thongs.

Series One consists of nine pieces of work highlighted by iconic imagery from Marvel renowned superheroes combined with iconic imagery from Stussy’s archive. If you don't know who Mike Dean is. He's the mastermind behind Kanye West's albums among many others. This interview may not be for everyone & the first five minutes you might be thinking - what the? No rest for the wicked. Last night was the launch of Opening Ceremony in Lane Crawford department store in the IFC building, Hong Kong. I've been a long time fan of Opening Ceremony since meeting Humberto Leon in Tokyo a few years ago. So it was great to be able to be invited along to support the launch. With over two thousand people attending, it was a night of food & fashion. Ice cream & hot dog stands scattered throughout the store kept a cool relaxed vibe to the event. Some familiar faces were there to support, along with special guest Chloe Sevigny. The after party then kicked on to FLY bar where biggie smalls was dropping as we arrived & double shots flowed for the rest of the night. Another great night in HK.

Saudi Arabia planning to build a mile high skyscraper

Saudi Arabia, head of Kingdom Holding Company recently, is planning on building the “Kingdom Tower” in Jeddah which will be 5280 feet high when completed. Designed by Adrian Smith, The tower will stretch one mile up into heavens and include 12 million cubic feet of space, several stories of office space, several stories for a hotel and four tiers of residential space, with the upper most tier reserved for "alternative energy generation" solutions.

The BMW Z4 GT3 was launched in March 2010, and quickly went on to rack up serious victories on the track, winning the FIA GT3 European Championship in 2010, and the marathon Dubai 24 Hours race in January 2011. Since that race, the race version of the car has been put through punishing testing, with the goal of creating a production version of the supercar, which BMW has just released.
